Grappling Hooks, Spy ID’s, and Toolbelts

Whether your child is into Clone Wars, “Gru” from Despicable Me, or Spy Kids, this camp will work through refraction, sound vibrations, reflection, magnetic forces, and some good ole chemistry for kids. Our students tested the length, weight, and design features for a simple grappling gadget that they used to target items around our center. All kids can design using their creativity, and we focus on unleashing that everyday at KSL.

On this first day of Spy Gadgets Camp, we imagine science gadgets that may be useful for Spies, Jedi’s, and other Heroes/Villains. Our Teachers engaged our students in discussions with the types of gadgets that may be useful in problem solving as a hero. Building relationships and using creativity to power the STEM gadgets that we make is part of our DNA, so we created our own unique Identifications and learned a bit about how to take a fingerprint. Our student scholars then designed a gadget belt using everyday materials to use for wearing the various tools that they create, and then made the ultimate getaway climbing gadget, a self propelled, yet safe, grappling hook. Learning how to use STEM to solve basic problems is not only fun for kids, but when you combine it with tapping into their imagination, its a powerful teaching tool. Each day this week will be filled with exploring gadgets using light, magnets, vibrations, and chemistry, as our students lean into Spies vs. Jedis. Some images were taken prior to Covid-19, as we request that all of our students wear appropriate facial coverings during the ongoing global pandemic.
