Heart Circulates our Medicine in Med School for Kids at KSL

When our children take medicine, it’s often with implicit trust, but what they don’t realize is that its actually the circulatory system and primarily our heart that pumps that medicine through our blood stream all around the body, so it ends up in the right place. Today in Med School for Kids, we explored a bit of drug delivery systems so kids can better understand exactly how the blood moves things all around the body

We started our hands-on science journey with 1 of 2 performance related interactive experiments, either raising kids heartrate with some light excercise (60 seconds of jumping) or actually trying to pump our customized 2-syringe heart pump 60x in 60 seconds to represent a resting heart rate. Kids don’t always realize just how amazing human physiology can be. In our kids lifetime, our hearts pump over ~2 billion times and up to 100,000 times every day.

To bring the experiments to our hands-on focused world, we helped kids see how our medicine is dissolved (we used skittles and/or color fizzers) to explore this feature, and that our blood contains not only oxygen but all types of nutrients from medicine to complex sugars, salts, and other items. Kids were able to test their circulatory systems by injecting their “medicine” with custom made KSL injection devices (kid-friendly designs) and see how that “medicine” now resides and moves through our blood streams to various parts of our body. Our eldest Next Gen Designers also featured discussion and experiments that related to the specific areas of the heart, including what actually happens to oxygenated blood. We don’t talk about it, as we would rather be about that hands-on science life for kids. Below are a few advanced injection system designs seen across our Chicago and Seattle Centers, including an innovative wearable heart pump, and an artificial heart circulation robotic system to provide an assist to animals.
