On this first Tuesday day of Spy Gadgets Camp, we imagine science gadgets that may be useful for Spies, Jedi’s, and other Heroes/Villains. Our Teachers engaged our students in discussions with the types of gadgets that may be useful in problem solving as a hero. Building relationships and using creativity to power the STEM gadgets that we make is part of our DNA, so we created our own unique Identifications and learned a bit about how to take a fingerprint. Our student scholars then designed a gadget belt using everyday materials to use for wearing the various tools that they create, and then made the ultimate getaway climbing gadget, a self propelled, yet safe, grappling hook. Learning how to use STEM to solve basic problems is not only fun for kids, but when you combine it with tapping into their imagination, its a powerful teaching tool. Each day this week will be filled with exploring gadgets using light, magnets, vibrations, and chemistry, as our students lean into Spies vs. Jedis. Some images were taken prior to Covid-19, as we request that all of our students wear appropriate facial coverings during the ongoing global pandemic.
Star Wars based STEAM is what powers kids up with gadgets in this camp.our innovators explored the many cool properties of magnets, not the least of which is how they can attract and repel magnetic materials. We used iron, neodymium, and ceramic bar/circle magnets to see which materials can be most easily manipulated with a magnet (obviously metals), and then switched to one of the most popular gadgets, manipulated other light energy to make a light saber. If you ever wondered, real scientists have made prototype light sabers with 4,000 degree energy light, which is wild, but at KSL, with safety at the forefront, we just learned how to manipulate safe energy spectrum to make gadgets and tools that we love.
